John Braver's life took a drastic change after the Ring of Destiny event. John had been newly discharged from the Army after more than a decade in its service and about a decade in the service of Army Special Forces. He was discouraged and unsure of how to proceed after retirement from the Army. Gaining super powers changed everything for this model of a patriotic soldier.

Braver
John Braver has lives as comfortably as he can with his minimum wage job and his pension from the Military. It's not a lot of money, but with military benefits and health care, John scrapes by. It's honest work, but it's only to cover John's expenses. Some people may forget that super powered beings with second lives still have to earn money, pay taxes, and buy milk, bread and toilet paper!
John is a rather patriotic sort. He never really wanted to be discharged from the Army. He would have preferred to be a lifer, however he recognized that he wouldn't be able to serve in the units he'd want to be in for much longer. He'd have to make way for the next generation of Special Ops folks. So John retired from Army Service with numerous accolades and praises. He still strives to serve his country and does so whenever he possibly can. He'll purchase war bonds, he votes, he'll participate in town hall meetings. He does what he believes every American should do!
John is a charismatic person. This stems from the activities he did while in Special Forces operations in the Balkans and in the Middle East. His job with his unit wasn't necessarily always about shooting guns. It was mostly about talking up the locals, befriending them, and learning from them. Since his job was to be friendly with people a lot of the time, it can seem like John is an amiable person. He is, and he's easy to get along with. However most of that is a front. John tends to get uncomfortable around a large number of people. He won't show it, as he's quite good at covering it up. It may seem like it's easy to befriend John, but it's difficult. It's tough for John to let people get too friendly or too close to him due to how he 'made friends' in the past. There are trust issues there. This is also probably why John has thus far been incredibly unsuccessful with keeping any kind of romantic relationship going for more than a couple of weeks.
Mirage
Not long after the Ring of Destiny, John began to lead a double-life. He found himself possessing an interesting assortment of powers. He learned that he had a degree of control over the molecules of his own body. He found that with a little concentration, he could change the density of his body. He could change it so much so that he could become immaterial and intangible, to the point that he was able to pass through obstacles and solid matter. It worked the opposite way too; John could grow denser, providing him with increased strength and durability with price of limited mobility. A side effect of growing intangible, John found the less dense he got the less visible he got. Being completely intangible meant that he was also completely invisible.
After practicing with his powers, John took up a costumed heroic identity known as Mirage. Mirage had been John's codename in the military as a member of Special Forces. He felt this name was still relevant now, and probably more so than before. He could fade away and seem like he was never there. People would think they really did witness a mirage. Mirage accepted long ago that he would never be the sort you'd see in a complete throw down with some other super powered being. His skills are more subtle and less violent. Mirage is a gatherer of information. He's more into finding out about a potential threat's weaknesses and neutralizing the threat than going toe to toe with someone. That could cause property damage and Mirage seeks to avoid such things. So Mirage uses his abilities more for espionage, spying, stealth and information gathering more than anything else. Mirage isn't above getting physical, especially when he's thwarting a mugging or a bank robbery. There's not much else to do then besides busting heads.
Mirage isn't above getting physical and he's also not above using potentially lethal means to stop crime. Mirage carries a pair of custom designed handguns that fires bullets that can be stopped by a bulletproof vest, generally. He prefers to not to kill though, he had enough of that in the Army. For that reason Mirage often uses a taser that is on his person to incapacitate a criminal.
