Up until the year 2010, the world was much as we know it - for most people. Underneath the surface lies a hidden history: centuries and even millenia of hermetic sorcerers and secret orders who wielded small but significant powers, and forged greater magics through complex ritual. Others have been born to another kind of power, their strength in genetic lineages and long tradition. Many of the figures of legend and folklore are true, but their abilities have generally been overstated through the distortion of time and retelling.

Hercules? Gypsy curses? Rasputin? All have some basis in a world far less restrained than most imagined. Even before civilization and the written word, these individuals have pursued their own goals, both heroic and base, but rarely making themselves obvious on the world stage.

That changed on October 11, 2010. A mysterious comet, dubbed CRUCIBLE-1138, on unerring path to the earth caught the scientific community and the world completely off-guard. The only thing that stood between the United States and climate changes more catastrophic than another Ice Age was the moon, which bore the brunt of the impact.

Four things happened. Chunks of the comet sheared off and were deflected back into space, with result unknown, while most of the remaining comet shattered on collision with the moon, breaking up into a thin, stationary ring around the planet. It also left a massive crater on the moon. The ring - and often this incident itself - is referred to as the Ring of Destiny. The final fragment of comet slammed into the city of Chicago, causing massive loss of life.

Falling dust from the meteor swirled planet-wide. Unseen, it amplified the planet's innate potential for supernormal abilities. On a global level, every sorcerer found their spells quicker, more potent. On an individual level, previously normal humans found themselves manifesting abilities of shocking scope.

The chaos that surrounded this sudden eruption made the comfortable secrecy of the past impossible. Though individuals were still able to protect their anonymity, the simple existence of supernormal abilities could never again be concealed.

World governments and individual citizens still struggle to come to terms with this new reality. Some are suspicious; others are awed. Every pundit in the world has tried to appear knowledgeable about the topic - few actually do. Prisons are ill-equipped to handle individuals who can walk through walls or crush rock; legal codes still fail to capture the complexity of the issues. Organizations such as S.C.I.O.N. in the US have arisen to contain the problem.

At the same time, metahumans find themselves dealing with a schism between old and new, between public defiance and private heroism. Many of the old guard blame the new arrivals for destroying their secrecy. Many of the new arrivals find themselves irked with the slow, convoluted methods of their predecessors - or the fact that many refuse to share their experience. Love or hate, us versus them, there is no united front when it comes to metahumans.
