Raw Ore
Born in Mobile, Alabama, with a rare neuromuscular disorder, Jamison “Jamie” Reid Dupree has been wheelchair-bound his entire life. His dad, Michael, left his mom, Ruth, when Jamie was still young and his maternal grandmother (called Nana) moved in with them to help his mom care for Jamie along with his older brother Nick (who was born with the same condition).
His mom and Nana encouraged the boys to live as normal a life as possible – without resorting to the Hallmark-movie-of-the-week “inspirational super-gimp” clichés. Even before he understood why, Jamie loved making people laugh. He’d repeat jokes he heard just to get a response. This evolved into a quick sense of humor that served him well as a defense mechanism in the sometimes lonely world of being a disabled American. The boys excelled in school, with Jamie being generally more outgoing and gregarious then Nick. Unfortunately, the world would not repay Jamie's open-armed approach.
Forged By Fire
As he grew up, it seemed that most of his friends, who were hardly numerous to begin with, seemed to outgrow him. They were just too busy advancing their lives at warp-speed to spend time with him. Jamie couldn’t keep up, literally or figuratively. The handful of friends who remained mostly transferred their communications from face-to-face to IMs and e-mails from whatever parts of the world they ended up in. Jamie and Nick also found it more difficult to make new friends. They weren’t teased or bullied so much as generally ignored by their peers, and as a result, developed shy, introspective personalities – Nick’s bordering gloomy. This, combined with his innate sense of humor, gave Jamie a knack for reading people.
Just prior to the Ring of Destiny incident, the boys’ (now basically men) mom got a job teaching art at PLU and uprooted the family to Virginia. At first relieved at the prospect of a fresh start, Jamie discovered that very little had changed. He enrolled at PLU, and easily fell in with the “outcast” clique of freaks, geeks, nerds, and slackers. Academically, Jamie continues to float between several subjects without ever finding a firm direction. He discovered a talent for writing, and made that his major, but still has no idea what form of career, if any, that might eventually take. He got a job at a small comic store in an effort to gain some form of income and settled into a quiet geek’s life, until…
Quenched by a Comet
Being an avid armchair scientist, Jamie watched the news of the CRUCIBLE-1138 comet at first with excitement and then with slowly dawning terror. With the societal chaos of seeming impending Armageddon, the near destruction of Chicago, and the sudden, prominent emergence of metahumans, Jamie has several conflicting, simultaneous emotions. The former two numbing him as he continues to process them and the latter giving him incredible, though cautious, optimism.
One day, while waiting for an accessible taxi, Jamie bashed the bus stop sign in frustration (“They’re ALWAYS late!”) and felt his hand merge with the signpost. He could feel the concrete surrounding the base of the post and every rivet holding the sign to it. As the taxi approached, he quickly pulled away from the sign and got in. At home, he continued experimenting with his new abilities. He discovered that he could merge with any metal object and move and feel it just like a part of his body. He also found that he could manipulate the moving parts of machines and pick locks by merging with doorknobs in this way. Most dramatically, Jamie discovered that by pulling his newfound awareness inward, he could transform his skin into whatever metal he was touching. In this state, he could walk and move like an average, able-bodied man, since his control of the merged metals is separate from, and stronger than, his control of his own muscles and bones. In an ill-fated attempt to merge with a light socket, Jamie discovered that electricity is very painful. “Note to self: Metal Skin + Electricity = Ow!” He has only just begun to unlock the full possibilities of his powers and he has no doubt that he will discover more.
Having read so many Kirby Comics, he knows what comes next. “With great power…something. I'm still working on it.” After trying several codenames on for size: “Galvanomatic? Too long. Metal Man? Too obvious. Metallico? Too hard rock. Sheen? Too shampooy.” He settled on Alloy. Not wishing to frighten his family, Jamie hasn’t revealed his plans for a double life yet. Using the blue Star of David necklace his mom gave him as his default catalyst, Alloy hunts down those who would prey on the weak. “I'm here to save the day! Even if I don’t know what the hell I'm doing….”
Powers and Abilities
When touching metal, Jamie can transform any or all his flesh and bones to an organic form of the metal he used. In this state he calls himself Alloy. Any object integrated in this way, acts like an additional limb. He can also merge any metal object he touches into his body. Alloy often merges pipes, poles, and other long objects into his hands to use them as weapons. He can move any articulated points on the object and can feel heat, cold, and pressure just like his own skin. With this ability, he can operate non-electronic machines, including locks, just by touching any metal part of them. This tactile sense has no limit, and Alloy can feel if anything is touching any added part of his body as acutely as normal skin contact. Alloy can also meld himself into a metal object and travel through any continuous metal path.
Alloy only feels pain if any of his metal is electrified or physically deformed somehow. The pain from electricity is amplified the more conductive he currently is. The only completely vulnerable areas on his body are his eyeballs and the soft membranes inside his nose and mouth. These areas can also be galvanized, but not without blinding or suffocating him. If he is anticipating it, Alloy can merge with incoming, hostile objects to dampen the impact. If he is somehow knocked unconscious, Alloy reverts to his nonmetal form and all of his attached components clatter to the ground. In nonmetal form, Jamie is physically disabled and unable to walk without his wheelchair.
In non-powered areas, Jamie is fairly good at reading people’s emotions and intentions, owing to his outsider status. He is also mildly knowledgeable in several fields as a consequence of his tendency to float between many areas of study without focusing very deeply in any of them. With the recent changes in his life, he has started to study chemistry and materials sciences at PLU. Jamie is unapologetically a geek, with an almost embarrassing amount of science fiction, fantasy, comic book, and gaming knowledge. As a lifelong comic book reader, the irony of his current situation is not lost on him. He also has a large amount of pop culture expertise and is likely to understand all but the most obscure references. With his somewhat limited human contact, Jamie has become fairly proficient with computers and is slightly more adept than the average user. In recent months, he has started to dabble in the darker side of computing by developing his hacking skills. He intends to seek out ways to learn more.
Artistically speaking, Jamie is a talented writer and maintains a semi-regularly updated blog. As a way of channeling his humor-defense-mechanism, he has begun experimenting with stand-up (or is it sit-down?) comedy. All of his audiences thus far have exploded into urine-drenched laughter.
